I won’t get too much into the background, I will let you find out when you play and don’t want to spoil anything. A couple of the main ideas are. -A once great kingdom that was ransacked by Kobolds, since then it has not been up kept. -Overgrowth, a castle that is getting devoured by nature. -Green color palette, all element should be very cohesive and even tied together with vines / plants. -Vaguely Norse in architecture. Inspiration Board: A Broken Wall: Main Entrance: Overgrown Village: City Street: “Yellow Will Protect You!”: Artifice (A Work in Progress) [From a Dev+ Forum Post by Scott “Scottie” Jones] Finally you’ve pulled yourself away from the pleasures of youthful vigor, and returned to the Entry Hall to explore more of this enchanting place… Upon approach to the next vestibule, you are greeted with enticing aromas and plates of various delicacies. Casks of ale and wine are piled here, with goblets and steins waiting to be filled. The glowing doorway to the next Hall of Artifice beckons. Beyond the golden portal you are transported to the Hall of the Feast of Plenty! On either side, tall columns of rough-hewn marble support the vaulted ceiling in this marvelous great-hall that even Dionysus would envy. In the chamber’s center an elaborate table stretches nearly the length of the room, piled high with masterfully prepared viands of every kind, each one more delicious-looking than the next. In the swirling steam rising from platters of tender roasted meats, lanterns gently sway, bathing the heaping delicacies in warm, welcoming light. The incredible bounty of food at its center seems overwhelming! Even the edges of the great hall are lined with tables heaping with food, each set of offerings showcased in the rays of mote-specked light that filter in from stained glass windows on all sides. So much exquisite fare,…but worry not! This food will never go to waste, since you won’t be the only one enjoying this amazing repast. Elegant guests wander and sit throughout the hall, enjoying delicacies of their own,…encouraging you to do the same. A fire crackles merrily in the great-hearth toward the back of the room, before which sits a single round table. And upon it, apparently, is the same mysterious box seen in the chamber before. As you turn back to the entrance, the glow of the golden door reminds you that there is at least one more hall to explore before you must consider the comparatively small nuisance of the firmly locked bronze double-doors back in the Entrance Hall leading to who-knows-where… Those thoughts are mere tickling annoyances though, really. With so many like-minded comrades around you, enjoying the finer things in life, why bother worrying about such trivial affairs. The pleasures of the palate await! Hopefully you’ve found this enticing… More to come soon! Scottie ^_^ Mountain Player Owned Town Template 01 Michael “Hutch” Hutchison has been hard at work in this latest Player Owned Town template. This is both an entirely new layout and a new biome representing a high mountain pass with a lake. Players who have selected this template and who have locked their submission form will be automatically switched over in Release 29. Here are a few shots of the work in progress which can be visited as a nested town in Hometown in Release 28. Broadcast Automated Phonograph Owners of a dynamic Player Owned Town will now be able to select the songs that play in their town using wax cylinders and a Broadcast Automated Phonograph. These songs will be played across the entire scene for all players to hear. We had originally planned for our world builders to add the music to the towns by hand, like we do any other scene, but as we have expanded the tools for the dynamic towns we realized we should extend those dynamic capabilities to music as well. We then realized we had already converted most of the music to wax cylinders. From there it was only a few steps (albeit complicated steps) to enable players to use those wax cylinders to build playlists for their towns. Stay tuned next week where we unveil a version of the Automated Phonograph for use in player homes! GDC & SXSW 2016 Wrap Up Once again we had a very successful presence at the 2016 incarnations of the Game Developers Conference, SXSW Interactive Conference, and SXSW Gaming Conference. Team members Finn Staber, Starr Long, and Richard Garriott all had events. Starr Long gave a talk at both GDC and SXSW Gaming entitled Co-Development: Open & Agile Game Development where he talked about the three principles guiding development of Shroud of the Avatar: Transparency, Cadence, and Feedback. Richard Garriott gave a talk about Personal Rapid Transport at SXSW Interactive, something he hopes will disrupt traditional transportation and is already in use at places like London’s Heathrow airport. Richard also spoke at a VR event at the Tech Ranch where he spoke about various experiences that VR could enhance like space travel and games. Richard finished up with an X-prize event where he challenged local Austin tech leaders to weigh in on the the Grand XChallenges that could be addressed through larger prize models. Finn Staber had a huge week supporting both SXSW and GDC! The buzz at both conferences last week was very positive about Shroud of the Avatar, and he had a chance to demo the game for numerous developers at Unity, Valve and more! He an eventful week full of 18-hour days, and he had the honor to be first professional developer to take the Unity Developer Certification exam, and he aced it! He gave the closing talk at SXSW Interactive on “Game Design & Interactive Prototyping,” and it was the most attended talk at SXSW Gaming! He helped IGDA Austin welcome multiple international teams into the Austin game dev community last week by setting up 4 room-scale VR areas with HTC Vives for them to demo their experiences while in Austin. He then traveled to GDC early Monday morning, and coincidentally helped set up 2 more Vives in the big Unity booth before the expo! Valve invited him to demo his VR music creation protoype, TheWave, at the SteamVR booth on the GDC floor, and his music group performed at huge after-parties every day of the week! He jumped on the red-eye Wednesday night after the big Unity Party, and was back at the studio Thursday morning running strong! He gave an additional talk on Friday afternoon on “Multiplayer Game Design,” and volunteered to help 4 student-technology teams from Japan haul their gear across Austin after the expo in his pickup truck. Austin hospitality, done right:) Cross Promotion: Recap’s Second Album: “Pronoia” Two years the Space Bards (now known as Recap) successfully Kickstarted their album, “Neon Milk”. We here at Portalarium are of course huge fans of theirs because of their amazing “Return of Lord British” (see below in all its glory). As part of the Neon Milk Kickstarter we did a cross promotion with Recap that is finally coming to fruition in Release 27 and 28. All backers of Shroud of the Avatar received the “gypsy dance” emote (as seen in the video above) in Release 27. In Release 28 all backers who backed both Neon Milk at $10 and Shroud of the Avatar at $25+ will receive a wax cylinder in custom Neon Milk green with a medieval instrumental version of Lord British Returns and the same song as an ABC file in Sheet Music format playable with in game musical instruments. Those who backed Neon Milk at $25 and Shroud of the Avatar at $25+ will also receive Sheet Music instrumentals of select songs from Neon Milk. They are now wrapping up the Kickstarter of their second album, “Pronoia” which met it’s initial $5k funding goal in just 2 days and they have already hit their first stretch goal: $6k Epic custom album artwork created by Tortoise & Hare Creations’ Indi Martin. This Saturday they are having a telethon to try and hit another stretch goal like $7k Official “Pronoia” drink recipe & pint glasses from Relics by Rild for $25+ pledges, and more! Hello everyone, this is Asclepius, with the next chapter in the fascinating saga brought to us by Elgarion De’Kahli. It is entitled The Fourth Era Background music by Smartsound On Moonandai, the 9th of Novembre, the Month of Thanks, the Laborious Season of Harvest, in the Midnight Hour A New Era Began — “The Fourth Era: The Oracular Enlightenment, 250 P.C. to Present The age following the Obsidian War of the Third Era, as many ages do, commenced with an end of one great power and the coming of another. As the final lance broke upon the shield of a weary soldier and the last sword spilt blood upon the death mired terrain of now forgotten battlefields, the Obsidian Empire diminished to mere fragments of its former glory, broken and defeated. And from the gloom of this former darkened age arose a seer–an entity of such reach and power that her eyes gazed upon all. Her coming was herald to a new age of hope and prosperity to many though others did not enjoy her prying eyes. In the beginning, her Watchers were scattered and few, but towards its culmination, the eyes of The Oracle were everywhere and there was never a soul who did not feel their ever-watching stare upon their backs. As the realms of the world recovered from the great war of the previous age, villages, towns and cities once again flourished as they once did in the ages of old. For the first time since the great Cataclysm, a renewed hope entered the minds and hearts of the masses, and the lords and ladies of the land sought treaty and peace over territory and strife. As the villages mended their fences and tended their sheep, the grand cities built high walls and spires in honor of their former glories. But within each settlement, another structure became common as the years passed, for the Conservatories of the Oracle were built and her reach and sight and influence soon became known to the world of New Britannia. In time, it was rare to converse with anyone that had not sought her guidance, whether by need or mere curiosity. The Conservatories of grand cities would oft be wrapped in long lines of people seeking her audience. One by one they would enter, and as they departed, they would forever feel her whisper and guidance upon their supple minds, gentle yet persuasive. So many cherished the words of The Oracle as a grand wisdom–unchallengeable. But where there is love, there is also suspicion and hatred. For the kings and lords of the realms, if not bending to her guiding hand, oft worried for her influence upon their peoples. To what end could she desire? Did The Oracle guide their people against the rule of law? Did their people now see her as the higher power? Even some religious leaders of the lands took to similar jealousy or worry as tithing or faith waned. Overall, however, her presence was accepted. The Oracle’s influence grew nearly unabated, and the The Fourth Era of The Oracular Enlightenment, unlike many of its predecessors, did not end in bloodshed. SorcerousSteve here to give you an update on Brittany! *Everything that has been shown so far is to be contained in the scene Brittany (Central). Last week I showed a screenshot of the South Portside Gate, this week we can see more of the Portside as it will appear from the ocean. Including one of Brittany’s main roads, the road that leads straight to Castle Brittany from the Port of Brittany. From the Port of Brittany to the Castle it is 5 blocks of dedicated area where you’ll find player housing. Taking this screenshot below into consideration we are still only seeing about 40% of Brittany (Central). This week I began construction on one of Brittany’s most affluent districts, located on the city’s North Gate. This is where a good number of the city’s town, city, and village lots will be located. A short walk away from the heart of Brittany, (Brittany Castle and the Oracle Temple), its comprised mainly of stone architecture, its gardens are tended, and its inhabitants live a more refined life style. If you got the money you definitely want to consider setting up a home here. Also on the works this week, is the Southern most part of Brittany Central. Unlike the latter, its is one of the cities poorest districts and in close proximity to the agricultural area of Brittany (Central) including the Brittany Dam. Many of its inhabitants live in shacks and ramshackles in muddy streets. That’s it for now folks! Stay tuned for more on the City of Brittany as it unfolds! Esteben Zaldivar Level Designer The Halls of Artifice (A Work In Progress) This is a continuation from a post from several weeks ago… [From a Dev+ Forum Post by Scottie Jones] As I return to work on the wondrous Halls of Artifice, I begin by designing the first of the three primary halls that are accessed from the main Entry Chamber. Each of these are themed upon the ideals of pleasure and bounty as personal paradises shared with only those lucky few who have already found their way here, and remain to enjoy their chosen state of bliss. An indication of what awaits within can be seen spilling out into the entry vestibule as one approaches the first of these enticing halls that I have created. Behold a chamber of sensual opulence, where exotic, overstuffed furnishings upon which one may sit and lay can be found on every side. Rich, warm light spills into the hall from velvet-curtained stained glass windows on every wall, and luxurious veils of red muslin hang from the ceiling, giving the chamber the feeling of grand comfort and intimacy that even a sultan’s harem would envy! This is the Hall of Youth and Vigor, and one can only imagine the pleasures to be shared with those deemed worthy of its offerings. Here and there, mirrors, vanities, shelves, and dressers tucked away in the shadowy recesses, offer the perfect gentle glow where an adherent to such joys might admire the perfection of one’s own visage, or discreetly gaze back on the activities of others. At the far end of the hall, below a dim lanthorn, a small circular table has been placed, upon which rests a strange object, like a hexagonal chest. What mysteries does it contain, and by what secret methods might it open? Is it, perhaps, a reliquary? The shadows around it are deep, and it will not be even nearly as enticing as the sights and sounds that will surround you once this chamber is adorned with the beautiful denizens that will welcome you to join them in their endless ecstasies. Turning back, one can see the golden doorway through which this hall was achieved. Could it be possible that each of the other doors leads to equally opulent and enchanting luxuries? If so, there can be little doubt that leaving this place of miracles might be the last thing you’d ever want to do! Ah well, as tempting as the glowing portal may be, the youthful beauties splayed conveniently upon nearby beds and couches,…or even the ones admiring themselves in the grand mirrors,…are far more tempting still. Perhaps they would enjoy some company? I hope you’ve enjoyed this first taste of Paradise! More to come… Scottie ^_^ New Male Avatar [From a Dev+ Forum Post by Kevin Wells] Hey everybody! My name is Kevin and I’ve been doing character art for Shroud of the Avatar for the past few years. It’s been a blast building content for the game. In my time here, I’ve worked on a variety of content; from creatures to armors, hats, and masks. It’s been a long road shaping and creating the many assets for the characters, but I’m very excited that now it’s time to revisit and push out a big polish pass on all the character assets. We decided to start at the beginning, and I’m proud to say that I was given the opportunity to kick off our character polish pass with the male player character. The new male avatar will debut in Release 28, and I can’t wait for everyone to get a look. I basically started over from scratch and built the avatar with an aesthetic that I felt best fit into the Shroud universe. And except for finer, more subtle details (particularly texture details in areas like the eyes and mouth) I’m calling the new avatar complete! As an artist, I never stop wanting to push the visual quality, but we absolutely wanted to get this guy updated as soon as possible. I also want to shout out a huge thank you to both to our animation lead Matt for marrying the new avatar to our existing rig and animations, and our newest character art department addition Fletcher, who helped in getting the many player wearables fit to the updated avatar silhouette. I’m thrilled to have the chance to make this update and I hope everyone likes the new male Avatar!
